Smartphone Moon Photography

I’ve been doing my fullmoon shots with my camera and 400mm lens on a tripod for some time now.

Then along came Slooh with the #supermoon- challenge which inspired me to go out for a few nights in a row to capture the waxing Moon.

I thought, what if I attach my cellphone to my telescope? This is when the real fun began. I’ve been able to push to a 6mm eyepiece but you have to be really quick if you have no tracker on your scope like me It’s quite tricky.

First I identify the area that I want to shoot – then focus the telescope with cellphone attached. I bought one of those adaptable cellphone holders. A word of caution – cellphones slip easily if you’re not careful. When I’m happy with the adjustment of the cellphone holder and focus is ok, I nudge my telesope so that the area to be shot is just outside of the field of view. As the area moves into view I take shots with a feather light tap on the cellphone screen. Then it’s to my computer to sort the blurry ones from the not so blurry ones! If your telescope has a tracker, things will be much easier but then you’re most probably already doing astro photography for real 🙂

Someone suggested that I should try to zoom in more but believe me, it will get really tricky if you are already using a high powered eyepiece because the motion of the Moon becomes intensified. Others advised that I should use continuous shooting. One could experiment with this but I have had no luck up to now. My cellphone’s camera seems to adjust focus and my continuous shots have all been very blurry.

Each cellphone is obviously different. The camera’s auto setting will most probably not give the best result. With some of my shots I even tried the “beauty” setting . So just play around with what you’ve got and try all your modes and exposure settings. The holders come in different sizes so make sure the dimensions will fit your phone. Read reviews on the different makes of holders before you buy. Some guys in my astronomy group have printed their own holders on a 3D printer.

Instead of going into a slump after the supermoon adventure, I will continue seeking interesting formations on the Moon. Eventually my plan is to do sketches of the images that I captured during this challenge.

Meet Dr Karen Masters and Stargazer Lottie

Dr-Karen-MastersForget about Barbie and the Disney Princesses. Stargazer Lottie won the Little Scientists category in Space.com’s 2015 Space Age Awards at the 112th annual North American International Toy Fair in New York City (Feb 2015)

The story goes that a five year old from Canada, named Abby, came up with the idea for Stargazer Lottie to join a line-up of super cool dolls.

Arklu Ltd had already produced Pirate Queen Lottie, Kawaii Karate Lottie, Robot Girl Lottie and Fossil Hunter Lottie. Creative designer of Arklu Ltd and co-founder of Lottie Dolls, Lucy Follet,  worked in collaboration with the European Space Agency to produce Stargazer Lottie.

As Abby had suggested, Stargazer Lottie would have her own telescope and constellation charts, posters of the Earth, the Moon and Venus as well as stars on her clothing. Lucy Follet called on astrophysicist, Karen Masters, senior lecturer in the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, to advise on all things astronomical. Now Stargazer Lottie’s box also includes a sheet with the biographies of famous women astronomers.

If Lottie Dolls catch on big time, little girls will toss away their make-up, high heels and jewellery, wear sensible clothing, stand firmly on there own two feet and aspire to become the future’s great scientists.

Science is not everything

Thirty Meter Telescope, Mauna Kea

The erection of a new large telescope has always been an exciting event for scientists in the field of Astronomy. The protests against the the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope to be erected on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, are gaining momentum as crowds gather “from Oregon to Kentucky, New Mexico, North Dakota, Georgia and Massachusetts, Korea, New Zealand, England and Germany. Many of the gatherings are being spurred by social media”

As an amateur astronomer I am torn between two sides. When I read the articles, posts and comments of the Hawaiian community, I realise the huge difference between the importance of Mauna Kea to astronomy and the Hawaiian culture.
I am always advocating the importance of preserving nature. Astronomers were the first to realise the harmful effects of light pollution on our planet and all living things. I set out to do astronomy, feeling that I would not only be doing science but also be contributing to the worthy cause of protecting and preserving.

The Thirty Meter Telescope will surely be an impressive sight and eventually the data it gathers will reach billions of people all over the world.

To astronomers the site of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve, which hosts 13 observation facilities, is of utmost importance. It is one of the world’s premier observatories for optical, infrared, and submillimeter astronomy.
In Hawaiian culture Maunakea, also known by its original name Mauna a Wakea is a sacred place. Wakea, sometimes translated as “Sky Father” is considered the father of the Hawaiian people.

I would never join a protest against the erection of a giant telescope and I do hope the “Sky Father” will give his blessing to the TMT and that the Hawaiian people will eventually be as much in awe of this magnificent structure as the engineers, astronomers and scientists and that in time to come accept that TMT was designed to bring our civilization closer to the stars.

James “Kimo” Kealii Pihana, Maunakea Ranger and Hawaiian Cultural Practitioner writes: “As a ranger on Maunakea, I’ve enjoyed working with many astronomers, who are generally people of good will and from whom I have learned much about the stars. But despite all of their scientific accomplishments, I do feel that much more needs to be done to bring awareness of and respect for Hawaiian culture on the mountain. Science does play an important role in people’s lives, but it is not everything. A spiritual connection is just as important. This is symbolized for modern Hawaiians by the humble stone and wood lele, the altar, at the summit”

The Dark Side of Light

I was born in a small town. Visits to Cape Town were big events. I remember the beautiful beaches, the cable car, the steepness of Kloofnek Road, my grandmother’s balcony and the fascinating lights at night. White, red, blue, yellow, and orange – shining, pulsating and blinking put on a spectacular show. Nights in our little town were quiet and lit up by the Moon and thousands of twinkling stars. If one stood really still, you could hear the high pitched buzzing sounds of insects and soft shuffling of nocturnal animals. Fireflies were abundant. If you lay on your back long enough, just looking at the stars, you were bound to see a few meteors streak across the sky.
I live in a city now. Visits to small towns are big events now. My body needs to escape from the extended run of the greatest show on Earth: The incandescent, compact fluorescent, mercury vapour, metal halide, halogen, low pressure/high pressure sodium vapour and LED spectacle.
Staging this ongoing show of lights, comes at a major cost – financially, environmentally and medically. One of the biggest disappointments: we were made to believe that excessive lighting would halt criminal activity.
As major infrastructure starts to crumble under the heavy burden of trying to keep this artificial show on the road, small towns need to start leading by example.
Does the community of Betty’s Bay feel deprived because they do not have the orange glow of high pressure sodium vapour lamps flooding the fynbos and into their bedrooms at night? It is a question of one or the other. We can “threaten wildlife, ruin habitats, foul the air, squanders resources, and blocks our view of the heavens” or have a kaleidoscope of lights switched on constantly. Even if we don’t care so much for the environment we can suppress the production of Melatonin in our own bodies and give rise to the disruption of our circadian rhythms (believe me we should not be messing with those) or we can prove that living without excessive illumination is the most natural thing in the world.

This is not only my take but research has shown “that blue light-emitting diodes (LED) pose a more serious threat. Blue light is dispersed through the atmosphere more easily than red (the reason why the sky is blue). To change from red/orange to blue-white blue lights means an increase in light pollution and a waste of energy. Thus, the use of the blue-biased LED is discouraged. (Example: This effect is particularly noticeable when meeting vehicles equipped with high intensity blue-white LED headlights)”
I would advocate that all external alarm lights be orange/red rather than blue. I have a neighbour who has a flashing blue LED to ward off criminals? These I feel should not be allowed at all. For me one of the most precious things about Betty’s Bay is its night sky and I spend a lot of time looking at the stars. Unfortunately the quality of Betty’s Bay’s night sky has diminished, especially in the last decade. Having a flashing blue LED disturb the serenity and beauty of the night is a worrying factor. If I feel so disturbed by this, how more so for all the nocturnal creatures?
